November Dancing Holiday
We cannot believe we are still getting tremendous support for our Old Time Dancing Holiday with 88 signed up for our 9th Holiday at the Langstone Cliff Hotel Dawlish Warren. We had our usual mix of Old Time Dancing with lots of fun and games. Some dancers wit, h long journeys arrived on Sunday but the majority arrived on Monday and there was a great atmosphere in the hotel lounges as dancers met up with friends and chatted while waiting for their rooms. Meanwhile we were setting up our equipment in the Ballroom, with the refurbished ballroom floor looking wonderful, getting ready for the first nights dancing David Last arrived and we were all set for the first evening.
We met in the bar at 6 for our drinks reception and after a delicious meal we were ready to dance. Monday night’s programme got off to a great start with the Ragtime Swing, followed by Saunter D’Amour some of the other dances on the programme that night included: Lola & Tango Last Vegas, Waverley & Trafalgar Two Steps, Victorian & Edwardian Gavottes as well as the Virginia Reel and progressive Quadrilles. During the evening we had several games of “The Bottle Game” , participant’s had a chance to win a prize, by throwing a large dice, ranging from a bottle of beer for 1 spot to wine for 4 spots and bottles of Prosecco for 6 spots or gambling with two dice to throw 7+ to win a large bottle of spirits. We finished the evenings dancing with the Doris Waltz. After breakfast on Tuesday morning we held our usual Social dance with everything from Modern Ballroom and Latin, sequence, Old Time and line dancing. During the morning session new for 2023 Kathy’s dance shoes were on sale and she had a very successful morning and will be attending again next year. Tuesday evening was our Ball night and as well as another programme of 19 dances and the Quadrilles we had “La Grand March”. In the interval we had a large raffle. The final night of the dance break we had another full programme of dances and a set dance, The Caledonians. As the theme for the evening was tartan we held a mini Highland Games with Curling and Caber Tossing, that proved to be hilarious. David Last provided the music and as always he played wonderful music for our dancing. We finished with Land of Hope and Glory, Auld Lang Syne and The King. Thank you for the many thank you emails and cards, it gives us great pleasure to see everyone happy and enjoying the dancing. Also our thanks to the Langstone Cliff Hotel, in our opinion, the best dancing hotel in the country. We are full for next year but if you are interested in Old Time Dancing with a great crowd of people and lots of fun contact us to go on the waiting list.

September
Fifty one dancers attended our September Tea dance despite the extreme heat. We had several visitors who had traveled long distances and some extended their stay for the Jane Austen Festival in Bath, on the Saturday. Following our move to our new hall in Bath, at the beginning of the year, we decided to have live music by David Last, for two of our monthly afternoon dances and provide a full afternoon tea. Both of these dances have proved popular with a full house each time and the April Tea dance for next year is already sold out with a waiting list. There was a happy friendly atmosphere as the dancers enjoyed the wonderful music played by David Last, a full programme of Old Time Dancing and the Afternoon Tea of sandwiches, savories and cakes went down really well. Everyone joined in to help set up tables etc. and to clear away after the buffet ready for the second half. With this level of support we will continue with monthly afternoon dances on the second Friday of every month with the extra live music and buffet Tea for April and September.

June
It was a lovely sunny afternoon for our June dance and it was a special afternoon as Frances and Robert Tingley chose to celebrate their Golden Wedding with Bath Old Time Dancers. Forty-six dancers enjoyed the afternoon dancing to the music of David Last funded by Frances and Robert. In the interval we enjoyed the lovely cakes and biscuits baked by Frances. They were presented with a basket filled with chocolate items all with a Gold theme and a rose called Golden Bouquet. The Old Time dance programme included some of their favorite dances and David Last played some wonderful music to accompany them making it a really lovely sunny afternoon party. |
As our May dance was the Friday following the Coronation of King Charles we celebrated with a Red, White and Blue theme. It was a great afternoon with a lovely party atmosphere with all the dancers joining in with the theme. The programme included a few dances we had not danced for a long time, White Rose Foxtrot and Tango La Pree we started with Georgella Blues followed by Serene Saunter, Winfield Quickstep, Tango Serida & Boston Two Step. The first half finished with the Honky Tonk Swing. After the interval for tea, biscuits & lots of chat, we danced The King’s Waltz & Coronation Parade. The rest of the programme comprised: Desmond Blues, Crinoline Gavotte, Chicago Swing & The Chester Waltz. All the dancers were presented with a commemorative pen. We are now looking forward to The Old Time Dance Society Ball of the Year in Bradford with a large group from Bath Old Time Dancers.

April
The April dance, our first tea dance with live music and a proper tea was a sell-out, we provided sandwiches, pastries and loads of cake with the help of friends Ann, Alan, Christine & Robert. Clare added to the buffet with a lovely ginger sponge and thank you to Dianne for all the support and help including selling the raffle tickets. David Last once again provided outstanding music to dance to, the programme included some classical but mostly traditional Old Time dances and we managed to fit the King’s Waltz in again to keep everyone up to speed. It was a lovely friendly afternoon with a great party atmosphere and as it was Easter the previous weekend everyone got an Easter Egg. As usual everyone joined in with carrying tables clearing away the afternoon tea, thank you Bath Old Time Dancers you are just the best.
March
We had a good turnout for our March dance with a new couple joining us, although they were local to the area, they thought they had not danced Old Time before. They were surprised they knew some of the dances on the programme and joined in with some they had not seen before. We were pleased when all the dancers were on the floor for The King’s Waltz and they all danced it beautifully, thanks to the Long distance training by Keith and Kath Jackson.

February
Our afternoon dances at our new location in Bath are proving popular. We held our second afternoon dance today (10th February) with 32 attending including four new dancers who have not attended our monthly dances before. Our Tea Dance in April, with live music by David Last, is now full with a waiting list. We provided scripts and with the permission of Kath & Keith Jackson showed the Bath dancers a video, on our large screen, of Kath & Keith dancing The King’s Waltz as it will be on our March programme. The King’s Waltz is a dance from 1913 that Kath Jackson and Hazel have worked together to revive. The Old Time Dance Society has accepted and approved it and will be on the Programme for the Ball of the Year at Bradford. The Old Time Dance Society members will receive a copy of the script in the April issue of the Newsletter.
