March OTDS Spring weekend Caernarfon
It is great to be back traveling around to Old Time Dances and Events, 16 Bath Old Time Dancers travelled to Caernarfon for the Old Time Dance Society Spring Weekend. We were staying at the Celtic Royal Hotel and it proved to be a very comfortable hotel. The hotel had a function room with a large dance floor and plenty of room on the carpeted area for us all to be seated this allowed us to be able to have all our meals in the same room. There was plenty to do and see within walking distance of the hotel and lovely places to visit for those who wanted to travel further afield. We enjoyed meeting up with friends from around the country and catching up with some members who we had not seen since before the pandemic. We enjoyed three excellent evenings of Old Time Dancing. Bernard and Dilys got the weekend off to a flying start with their programme starting with the Veleta, and included Tantivita, Sovereign Saunter, Rialto Two Step, Mulberry Glide to name but a few, they finished with Valse Louise. There were three sets for the Quadrilles that first night and David Ingley, our Musician for the weekend, said he was beginning to think he would never play the music for a set dance again. We must be the only Society dancing the set dances. There was a great atmosphere the first evening and that carried through the whole weekend.
On Saturday evening the leaders were Jonathan and Lorraine Tranter, it was the first time they had led for the Society and what a treat it was. Not only were they beautiful dancers Jonathan was an excellent MC and a good sport, providing the right balance of fun and repartee. Their programme started with the Regis Waltz and was a well-balanced programme of Old Time favourites including the Waverley & Premier Two Step, Wedgewood Blue Gavotte, Empress Mazurka, Saunter Adele, and Solair & Firefly Tango. Jonathan had a bit of fun with the members with the Balmoral Blues and everyone enjoyed the evening.
The Committee led the dances on the Sunday night taking it in turns to lead dances apart from the first and last dances, the Vesta & Alison Waltz, which the whole Committee led, of course Alison & Tom were invited to join the Committee on the floor for the Alison Waltz. No set dance but quite a few members joined in with the Dashing White Sargeant, The Progressive Quadrilles and the Eva Three Step. There was the Classic & Ascot Gavotte, Britannia & Sheldan Saunters and The Tayside & Magenta Tangos. There is not space to list all the dances for the whole weekend but everyone had a fantastic time dancing and enjoying the music of David Ingley who played some lovely music including the original music for some dances and some great tunes to sing along to. Not only was it a great weekend of catching up with friends, dancing and singing we had the absolute joy of fabulous weather although this was the Spring Weekend it felt like Summer. Now looking forward to the Ball of the Year in May at Torquay.
At the beginning of March we had our monthly visit to Devon for the Merry Makers dance. Then on Saturday 5 March we travelled up to stay with our friend Michelle in Uppingham, Rutland for her Sunday Tea dance. We had a lovely meal out in Uppingham on Saturday night and then on Sunday loaded the car with equipment and cakes etc., to head to the hall Michelle now uses for her dances. It was a good afternoon and we danced some of the dances that were going to be on the programme for The Old Time Dance Society weekend in Caernarfon later in the month.
